Becoming Her Doesn’t Stop After Motherhood | My Honest Postpartum Fitness Journey

Like many women, I gained weight during pregnancy. For me, it was 48 pounds.

Some of my favorite outfits don’t fit right now. My body feels different. My schedule looks different. My priorities have shifted.

And yet, somewhere between the sleepless nights, the diaper changes, the feedings, and the baby cuddles, I realized something important:

Becoming her doesn’t stop after motherhood.

In many ways, motherhood introduces us to a completely new version of ourselves.

When I became a mom again, I thought I would immediately start thinking about “getting my body back.”

Instead, I found myself learning an entirely different lesson.

Motherhood may pause your dreams,
but it doesn’t erase the woman you were becoming before your baby arrived.

It doesn’t cancel your goals.

It simply asks you to become her differently.

A few months ago, my body was growing my son. Today, I’m learning how to care for the same body that carried him here.

The Pressure to Bounce Back

The moment a woman gives birth, it seems like the world starts a countdown.

The Mirror Looks Different

A few weeks ago, I stood in front of my mirror.

Not to criticize myself.
Not to compare myself to who I was before pregnancy.

Just to look.

Really look.

I saw stretch marks.
A softer stomach.
Legs that carried me through pregnancy.
Arms that now carry a tiny human almost all day.

And for the first time, I didn’t see a body that needed fixing.

I saw a body that had done something extraordinary.

That doesn’t mean I don’t have goals.

I do.

I want to feel strong again.
I want to run.
I want to wear clothes that make me feel confident.
I want to recognize the athlete that’s still inside of me.

But now those goals come from gratitude instead of punishment.

I don’t want the exact body I had before my son.

I don’t want the exact life I had before him either.

I loved that version of me, but she isn’t the woman I am today.

Today, I’m a mother of two.

Today, I’m a wife.

Today, I’m building businesses.

Today, I’m navigating a new season of life.

And all of those experiences have changed me.

Not for the worse.

Just differently.

Listening to My Body.

I’ve always been athletic.

Movement has always been a part of my life. My body lets me know when I’ve been sitting still for too long.

Exercising has always been something that helps me feel strong, grounded, and connected to myself.

During pregnancy, I tried to maintain my usual fitness routines.

And repeatedly, my body told me to slow down.

So I listened.

I quick working out entirely during my pregnancy.

As someone who enjoys movement, slowing down felt unnatural at times.

But pregnancy taught me one of the most important lessons I’ve learned as a woman:

Your body is always communicating with you. The question is whether you’re willing to listen.

So I listened. I rested more.

I adjusted my expectations.

I gave myself permission to move differently.

And now postpartum, I’m carrying that same lesson with me.

My Postpartum Fitness Journey Looks Different

Right now, I’m not in the gym.

I’m not following a strict workout program.

I’m not chasing a perfect body.

I’m not trying to rush the process.

Instead, this season looks like:

Long solo walks.

Stroller walks with my children.

Evening walks with my husband.

Soft workouts at home.

More water.

More nourishing meals.

More grace.

I waited for my six-week postpartum clearance before easing back into physical activity because healing mattered more than rushing.

And honestly?

That patience has become the foundation for this season.

Because healing isn’t something to rush through.

Healing deserves respect.

Five Things I’m Focusing on Right Now

Instead of chasing perfection, these are the habits I’m committed to:

1. Moving my body because I love it—not because I hate it.

Some days it’s a three-mile walk.

Some days it’s stretching for ten minutes.

Movement counts.

2. Fueling my body instead of restricting it.

My body is still healing.

It deserves nourishment.

Not punishment.

3. Giving myself grace.

Rest isn’t laziness.

Recovery is part of the process.

4. Celebrating consistency over intensity.

One workout doesn’t change your life.

Neither does one missed workout.

What changes your life is what you do consistently.

5. Remembering that I’m still worthy today.

Not twenty pounds from now.

Not after I fit into my old jeans.

Today.
